Amish Sugar Cookies


  • 1 cup butter, softened
  • 1 cup canola oil
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 cup confectioners’ sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 4 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon cream of tartar


  1. Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F.
  2. In a large bowl, beat the butter, the oil, the sugar, and the confectioners’ sugar.
  3. Beat the eggs into the sugar mixture until well-blended.
  4. Beat the vanilla into the egg mixture.
  5. Combine the flour, the baking soda, and the cream of tartar in a separate bowl.
  6. Gradually add the flour mixture into the egg mixture.
  7. Drop the dough in small teaspoon-sized clumps onto ungreased baking sheets.
  8. Bake until the cookies are lightly browned, about 8-10 minutes.
  9. Transfer the cookies to wire racks to cool.
  10. Serve.
